This is the song which not only sets the tone for the rest of the album: it also provides us with a motif, a thread which ties the album together. Probably no one's gonna read this but here's my interpretation of the song:

Maybe this should have been the second track, since it seems like he has yet to lose his mind Dylan clearly is a genius in our timeĮdit: Not Dark Yet doesn’t fit in, except for the loss of love. The songs become even scarier live, the phrasing and vocal intonation, not to mention the music itself. If you can be sure to listen to the live cuts on Fragments. This is just my personal interpretation, even though I don’t know much about literature or analysis, and maybe less about mental illness. He succeeds in controlling his Love Sick condition by focusing on Highlands the place, and by the third scene of Highlands the song, he expresses envy of happy couples without actually wishing them or himself much antipathy He’s trying to be nice, even though the encounter with the waitress clearly pushes him close to open hostility. Highlands occurs after he’s been through therapy. This dawned upon me today while I was doing three of my favorite things together, riding the bike, listening to music. It expresses regrets more than malevolence, and has maybe the most poignant lyrics of the album: Some trains don’t pull no gamblers/ No midnight ramblers like they did before.Įven some of the outtakes seem to fit into the overall theme set by Love Sick. I guess, from the canonical songs of Time Out of Mind, Trying to Get to Heaven might be the exception. Either way, from song to song, there is a similar theme, the loss of love and the resulting obsession. He probably doesn’t mean for the narrator to be the same person in all the songs, but it could be. He’s mentally ill to an extent in each of the songs, some of which portray a greater degree of threatening, grotesque, or sinister thoughts and words. The character Dylan is portraying, the narrator I guess, is obsessed with someone in every song, obsessed to some point beyond mere distraction. Listening now to Fragments repeatedly, I think Love Sick sets up the rest of the album. Soy Bomb was definitely a distraction, and I barely got the gist of the words. I do remember Love Sick from the Grammy broadcast, and I thought the song was a great one, hearing it that one time. I just started listening to Time Out of Mind and Fragments a couple of months ago, whenever Fragments came out.
